Dandelions in my hand
The fantasy keeps me afloat
I tie dreams on to a string
and set them free in the sea.

Streets filled with topaz
Brush through my fingers
I tie the night on to a balloon
and carry it home.

Withered flowers in my purse
Rustle quietly, blessing me with every turn
I tie the prayers on to a door step
and create a whole new world.

The invisible, the visible and the one that vanished January 29, 2014

The invisible, the visible and the one that vanished
have all left the room.
Strangely, I am not unhappy.
There is a peace in the room.

Like a blank and empty page,
fresh, new, creamy cartridge sheet.
A black pen in my hand,
a new illustration awaits.

But the room is so beautiful and empty
even though so small.
May be tomorrow I’ll try
All it really needs is one black spot.

Like the seed of a new life
A dream of a new hope.

Two lights come on from the opposite sides of the wings. Two spiders are on either side of a web. The web fills the stage. The female in the centre and the male on the side.

(A light comes on from the top showing the male spider)

Male spider: It was morning

(A light comes on from the FOH showing the female spider)

Female spider: It was evening

Male spider: I wanted to wake up but I couldn’t.

Female spider:I wanted to sleep but I couldn’t.

Male spider: I was in a dream and I could feel myself

Female spider:I could feel my leg fall asleep and I twitched.

Male spider: My eyes wouldn’t open.

Female spider:My eyes couldn’t stop staring into space.

(The male crawls to the sides of the web and makes a hole to crawl to the other side. The female turns around to look at him when he succeeds in coming on to the other side)

(The top light fades and the FOH light stage left comes on)

Male spider: It was night.

Female spider:It was day.

Male spider: Everything slipped off my body and I was in my night clothes.

Female spider:Time stood still. I stood still. I moved. Time moved with me.

Male spider: I sank into the pillow cover. White pillow covers. White sheets.

Female spider:The sun abandoned me so I (puts on sun glasses) abandoned the sun back,

Male spider: Peaceful dreams of mysticism.

Female spider: Chaos, like It were eight o’ clock in the morning, outside three schools and a bus broke down.

(The female is not pleased and turns away. The male approaches her slowly. The lights close in on them.)

Male spider: It was neither day nor night.

Female spider: it was neither night nor day.

Male spider: A cat screeches outside my window.

Female spider: The punjabi boy returns to his mother sleeping in the balcony.

Male spider: The air becomes heavy and a wheeze sets in.

Female spider:A man walks down the road with the Bombay theme tune playing on his mobile phone.

Male spider: Inha…ler In…ha…ler. (Takes the inhaler. Breathes deep breath) Sleep. Finally.

Female spider: Finally … an epiphany.

Male spider: It was neither night nor day.

Female spider:It was neither day nor night.

Male spider: I was right, of course, but she wasn’t wrong either.

Female spider: I was right, he was right. The world was wrong.

Male spider: Molehills should be broken down with a sledge hammer.

Female spider:I don’t create mountains. Im brave enough to accept they exist.

Male spider: Forgive and forget. Forget and forgive. Whichever comes first.

Female spider:Forgiveness is the key to godliness. Or some such thing. I don’t want to be God. I want to be real.

(The two spiders come close to each other. The female lures him in. Two top lights and two bottom lights come on. The center light fades away. )

Male spider: It was neither day nor night.

Female spider: It was neither night nor day

Male spider: It was dawn

Female spider:. It was dusk

(Male spider goes close to the female spider. She lets him come close and massage her head. Lights fade.lIghts fade out slowly and a red light in the center fades in, )

Male spider: It was morning.

Female spider:It was evening.

Male spider: It was day.

Female spider: It was night,

(She starts to eat him. Lights out )

The broken heart cannot fall in love
all it can do is write cathartic poetry

Everything above
and everything below
is just space.
Devoid of emotion and time
The pieces just float in water
neither drowning
nor rising.
Sticky tape doesn’t help either,
nor does glue or fevicol.
The darkness really has no answers

The broken heart knows
it has become fodder now
what it is looking for now
Is not to be reattached,
but to find a seed,
and grow again.

Today

was not about the thunder and the rains

was not about the lightning and the fire

was not even about the aftermath

Today

was about discovery

of one another

was about disbelief in friendship

and

renewed faith in life.

Today was more than a Fool’s Day

Kunal: What will we do sitting here?
Dad: Atleast the two of you complete the oath. If all three of us sit in the car what is the use of coming all the way climbing the stairs. So just shut up and sit here both of you !
Kunal: You took the oath, we did not.
(Dad walks angrily to stage left to call Murugan uncle, Spot on Dad)

Kunal: You’ve become such a pain after …
Chutki: What ! What ! Say it !
Kunal: Nothing.
Chutki: You and dad don’t tell me anything. The two of you act as if I don’t exist. I hate you ! I hate you !
Kunal: I hate you too. I have to give up everything because of you.
Chutki: Where’s Dad? I want daddy !
Kunal: Shut up and sit here, you idiot. He’s already pissed with me.

Chutki: I have them.
Kunal: What ! How ?
Chutki: Papa gave them to me, he said he’ll take them from me later.
Kunal: I knew it. I knew that I gave him the keys! He always does this. He never admits the truth and agrees its his mistake. That’s why she left us.
Chutki: What ?

Kunal: Ask him … let’s see how he answers your question.
Chutki: Papa, Why did mama leave us ?
Dad: (Uncomfortable) I don’t know putt. We’re going to ask god that. And we’ll ask God to send Chutki’s Mama quick …
Kunal: Oh quit it dad ! Bribing God will not help bring Mama back. She’s never coming back and it’s all thanks to you …
Dad: You’re still a child you won’t understand it.
Kunal: I am a child that is why I have the guts to tell the truth.
Dad: You’ve become very big, haven’t you !
Kunal: Ne pa. Leave every thing aside, tell me which class is Chutki in ?
(Chutki brings out her inhaler from her pouch and gives it to kunal)
Kunal: What !
(Chutki hands him the inhaler and he shakes it and gives it to her, she takes a puff and they repeat the process once more)
(Chutki catches her breath and asks Kunal)
Chutki: Will mama ever come back, bhaiya ?
Kunal: (silence)
Chutki: Tell me the truth please…
Kunal: I don’t know … I really don’t know. (Pause) But … I … I will never leave you.
Chutki: Even if I ask you a million questions.
Kunal: You can ask me a million, billion, trillion even.
Chutki: Bhaiya, did mama go because of me?
Kunal: Na … you are still not that powerful …
(Makes a face)
Chutki: I miss her, Bhaiya.
Kunal: Why ?
Chutki: Because she always knew which questions I’d ask her. She knew more than papa, you and me. She just got me.
(They have reached the temple peak but they walk towards the car park. Dad is frozen in space looking at them walk off)
Kunal: I could try to understand you … (walking off stage)
Chutki: Then you can’t call me baby elephant.
Kunal: You toh are my little baby and you are as intelligent as an elephant …
Chutki: … aaahhhahahahah…(pokes him in the side)
( They exit stage tickling & poking each other. Dad is lost. Lights fade)

Who knows how to make love stay?

In the winters of life

and a warm summer day

Who knows how to make love stay ?

In the mornings of youth

and the nights of grey

Who knows how to make love stay ?

Who knows how to survive ?

In the silence of time

and the loneliness of a strife

Who knows how to survive ?

In the glory of right

and the warm limelight

Who knows how to survive ?

who knows how to make love stay …

Who knows how to make love stay?

In the winters of life

and a warm summer day

Who knows how to make love stay ?

In the mornings of youth

and the nights of grey

Who knows how to make love stay ?

Who knows how to survive ?

In the silence of time

and the loneliness of a strife

Who knows how to survive ?

In the glory of right

and the warm limelight

Who knows how to survive ?

who knows how to make love stay …

who knows how to make love stay …

On the insides of the heart

and the entrails of life

There is a mirror of you

with a reflection of me.

We stand together,

toes touching each other,

with lights of glory,

patiently waiting for the universe

to unfold our story.

Tonight I sleep
no glimpse,
no thought,
no dreams.
tonight,

will be the first of many.
Tonight,
will be a new day
without you.
