He asked “How old are you?”

She stood on the ledge like a victorious king in his balcony
and said “I’m five”
“All of it.
Not a day older.
Not a day younger.
So that makes it my birthday today.
We’ll wear party hats with elastic
that will pinch our skin.
Drink rasna and play
Musical chairs.
Eat out of paper plates
that can neither hold the samosa
Nor the chips.
We’ll play Hide – and -seek
and make believe.
‘Cause we…
No, I still believe in princes and princesses
and unicorns.
And adventure, courage, bravery and rescue.

I’m five, all of it.
Not a day older.
Not a day younger.
I still believe that summer lasts for
five hundred days.
And that the mango tree on which we play
our summer games
will never be cut down.
And the mulberry tree will always provide our
evening snack in the garden.
Or that the terrace and passage way on which I
hop and skip will be never be demolished.
And that photograph of the five of us,
On the sofa,
will always bring us smiles.

I’m five, all of it
and I still believe. “

I know you’re here

But you aren’t.

I know I asked you to leave

But you’re still here.

Its just that …

All I’m saying is …

I uhh…

I just need to understand this is reality.

My reality.

Not anybody else’s.

Not part of a dream-to-be.

Just reality.

I need to understand that…

I need to see  my totems

Need to see them live, breath, spin turn, make noises,

loud noises.

Not over analyze  Nymphs, Gods, Devas, Asuras, Masters,

Minions, Mortality, Immortality, Ganesha, Karthik, Saraswati, Lakshmi,

mars, venus, theories, love, family, patriotism, religions, crowds, loneliness,

villages, towns, countries, continents, east, west, north, south, inner world,

outer world, real world, three worlds, nine worlds!

…I just need my world

I just need you here.

Not to hold my hand.

or offer your shoulder.

Just because I need you.

Even though I don’t have

any romance left in me.

After all these years.

Even though I don’t have

any beautiful voices growing in me

After all these horrid months.

Even though I don’t have

anything left to say to you

after all that I ‘ve said.

I know you’re here.

But you aren’t,

because you have places to be

and things to do.

I know I asked you to leave

But you stayed.

Even though you never promised

to stay forever.

But I just assumed you would.

Will you stand and wait with me then

and let this lucid dream pass ?

Even though I can’t find the end.

Even though I can’t find the answers.

Even though I can’t put a full stop.

Will you stand and wait with me ?

Come !

Lets Fight !

You & I

Let’s fight a silent war.

Just You & I

And then when we meet,

we’ll know who’s won

who’s lost

who couldn’t resist the temptation.

Come! Let’s Fight,

Without any guns.

This is no world war

Or chinese torture

Or Slow death,

This is a fight.

Just between you & me.

Because nobody else deserves it.

None of the other men even came close to it.

In fact they are so far behind in my past

That they can’t even fight my conscience

Come, Lets Fight!

You move ten steps backwards

And I’ll move ten steps backwards,

And then we’ll know what is our weapon.

Let the games begin…

You and I,

We watched the sky after the  rain,

Cold,

Gray,

Completely unromantic,

Not a leaf was moving.

You & I

We watched the sky after the rain,

Only

You weren’t really there.

Radio playing in the background. Sounds of chopping vegetables, running water, vessels banging.

He: Five minutes ! Nonsense, I'll give you two minutes.
She: Shiva ! okay two minutes! (pause) Tell me didn't you have a meeting today ?

She: The dal. Its done.
He: So can we then...
She: No
He: No ?
She: First you'll have to sing and dance ... with me.
He: Both. Right here in the kitchen. I think your being a bit too demanding.
She: A little... may be. I'm sure you don't mind.
He: No. Any requests, my love ?
She: Tumse milke aisa laga Tumse milke armaan hue poore dil ke Ae meri jaane wafa

(Sounds of vessels falling on the floor, pressure cooker whistle going off, the door bell and running flip-flops.)
She: (opens the door) Hi
He: Hi. Whats all that noise ? Is there anybody else in the house ?
She: No just me.
He: Hmmm. Okay. Have you taken your medicines ?
She: Medicines ? uh... yes. Yes I have.

We ran away to an Island,

far, far away,

Where there was

No man,

No woman

and No doubt.

Blood Red April 27, 2010

Giant crystal chandelier,

Red crystal chandelier.

Hung on the ceiling of a

Seven star hotel.

Suspended with

Wire & twine.

The wire breaks.

One by one.

The four twines break.

The chandelier falls,

But the crystals fly

towards the sky.

The chandelier crashes

against

The pure white marble floor.

The metal body lies on the floor

like an exhausted ballet dancer.

The crystals are broken

into icicles,

into constellations,

into powdered lead –

only blood red.

Fantasy, you must wait today.

You cannot two-time and play cheat.

You must listen to Milton’s choice

You must take the Frost Road

Fantasy, you must wait today.

The truth lies in the moment,

The one that has past in restlessness,

The one to come to test your patience.

Time plays devil’s child today,

But you can fight.

With just water and silence

Time is your enemy

which also makes him your

Best friend.

For Once you have to learn to fight without a

Fight.

We could, then be together for

Eternity.

Fantasy you must wait today.

Dreams Of Insanity. April 20, 2010

In dreams of Insanity,

You &  I would ride through

streets with red lights

On my moped.

You the passenger,

I the rider.

With your hand on mine.

I become Durga

I become Kali

I become Chamundeshwari.

We’d travel through bizzare allies

And take on shunned adventures.

We’d ride to the edge of the mountain,

And fall through the clouds,

Sink into the air,

Into the metal,

Molten rock

And melt into the sun.

In dreams of Insanity.

You and I would be children

Running around  a square,

A square called Abshot layout.

With naked feet.

You, the conquerer.

I,  the captured princess.

We’d run around the square

Filled with sprinklers and sunlight.

But avoid that lane

That should be avoided.

You’d insist on  sitting right

beside me in the play school

Class photo.

Your hand on my shoulder.

You, the brave king.

I, your beloved Queen.

On Diwali,

You’d come home to give me sweets

and play with sparklers.

But I would miss you,

Because I would’ve gone to your place

to give you sweets and play with

Sparklers.

And then we’d both cry

Because we missed each other.

I’d pine and wait

And wait and pine.

Lose all hope of a

Happy Ending.

And there you’d be with me,

With your golden hair,

Brown eyes,

Unsmiling lips,

And droopy shoulders… you’d stand.

Wait for me to get up.

We’d slowly walk,

My little finger crossed with yours,

Into the sun.

In dreams of Insanity…

In pure & bizzare

dreams of insanity.

It would’ve been the conflicts of all conflicts,

If you and I were a reality.

It would’ve been a mad love affair,

If you and I were a reality.

Friends would’ve shunned us,

Family, disowned us.

The world would’ve ignored us,

But nothing would’ve mattered

Because it would’ve been a crazy love affair.

We wont have spoken of mere

Circles & squares.

But of Enticing checks

And Golden shells,

Flowers of spring

and Glorious space!

( Oh! so glorious space!)

Of course you would’ve won the conversation.

I would just be happy with a good argument.

You always wanted to win.

I, merely wanted you…

Wanted to hold your face in front of mine.

If  You &  I were a reality.

Wanted to disappear into the silence

If  You and I were a reality.

Wanted to

hold my breath

leave my breath,

count my breath,

count your breath

count the words,

that slip into the

darkness,

count the worlds

that slip into

madness,

count the moments

seconds,

minutes,

hours

that will never be true.
